Dependency is not a weakness
Whether it involves alcohol, drugs, gambling, food, nicotine or a compulsive habit, dependency is rarely about willpower. It usually grows from deeper emotional and psychological needs, and often from the way the brain learns to seek relief or reward.
That is why simply "trying harder" so often fails, and why there is nothing to be ashamed of. At OLIP Therapy we look beneath the surface, gently addressing the causes so that change can last.
An important safety note: stopping alcohol or some drugs suddenly can be dangerous. Please speak with your GP before making big changes, so any withdrawal can be managed safely. Our therapy works alongside your medical care, not instead of it.

- Eases cravings and urges and gently reprograms unhelpful habits
- Builds resilience and self-worth, so change is easier to sustain
- Gives practical coping tools for the moments that feel hardest
Recovery is possible, at your own pace
Change rarely happens in a straight line, and that is completely normal. With the right support, many people find they can loosen a dependency's grip and build a life that feels freer and more their own.
Questions you may have
Does needing help mean I am weak?
Not at all. Dependency is driven by emotional and neurological patterns, not a lack of willpower. Reaching out is a sign of strength, and you will be met here with understanding, never judgement.
Is it safe to just stop on my own?
For some dependencies, especially alcohol and certain drugs, stopping suddenly can be medically risky. Please talk to your GP before making big changes so any withdrawal can be managed safely. Our therapy works alongside that medical care.
Is what I say confidential?
Yes. Your sessions are private and treated with the strictest confidence. In the rare situation where there is a serious risk to safety, a therapist may need to involve others to help keep people safe, and they would talk this through with you.
Can therapy work alongside other support?
Yes. Our support sits comfortably alongside your GP, medical treatment, and groups such as AA or NA. Many people find a combination works best, and we are happy to be one part of that.
Which approach is right for me?
It depends on you and what you are working through. We offer counselling, CBT, hypnotherapy and Hypno-CBT, and we will talk through the options together at your free consultation.
Do you offer this online?
Yes. We offer support in person at our Hampshire practices and online across the UK, so you can begin from wherever feels most comfortable.
