The approach

Turn what is holding you back into the way forward

This coaching approach draws on Stoic philosophy, made practical for modern life. Its core idea is simple but powerful: the challenges, setbacks and frustrations you face are not just things to survive. They are the raw material for growth.

Almost two thousand years ago, the Roman emperor and Stoic Marcus Aurelius observed that the very things that block our path can become the path itself. Coaching helps you live that out, changing how you see your obstacles, how you act on them, and how you carry yourself through them.

Coaching sessions run in person at our Fareham practice, with clients travelling in from Southampton, Portsmouth, Winchester and Basingstoke, and securely online wherever you are in the UK.

What coaching can help with

Whatever stands in your way, we help you meet it well.

Feeling stuck

Find clarity and direction when you know something needs to change but not what or how.

Confidence & self-doubt

Quiet the inner critic and build a steadier, more grounded belief in yourself.

Direction & purpose

Get clear on what matters to you and what a meaningful next chapter looks like.

Procrastination & momentum

Break the cycle of putting things off and turn intention into steady action.

Resilience after setbacks

Burnout & balance

Reset, protect your energy, and build a way of working and living that lasts.

How the approach works

A clear, practical method drawn from three timeless Stoic disciplines: perception, action and will.

See it clearly

We look at the obstacle without the panic or the story attached to it, and find the opportunity hidden inside.

Focus on what you control

You pour your energy into what is truly yours to influence, and gently let go of what is not.

Take deliberate action

We turn insight into small, bold, repeatable steps that build real momentum.

Stand firm

We build the inner steadiness to keep going through setbacks, frustration and doubt.

Turn the obstacle into the way

What once blocked you becomes the very thing that moves you forward, and the change lasts.

What happens in a session

Individual to you, at every step

Every session is shaped around where you are and where you want to be. We get clear on the obstacle in front of you, then work out what is truly yours to control and what the next right step looks like.

Between sessions you put small, deliberate changes into practice. Over time these compound, and the things that once felt immovable start to shift.

Why this approach

Ancient wisdom, made practical for now

The Obstacle is the Way is not about positive thinking or pretending things are fine. It is a grounded, realistic way to meet life as it actually is. Here is why it works:

It is practical, not abstract, turning timeless ideas into clear, doable steps.

It is built around you, your goals, your pace and your own definition of success.

It works with obstacles, not around them, so the progress you make actually lasts.

It is forward-looking, focused on who you are becoming, not only on what has been.

It sits alongside therapy, so if something deeper surfaces, counselling, hypnotherapy, CBT and EMDR are right here.

Common questions about coaching

What is the difference between coaching and therapy?

Coaching is forward-focused and goal-oriented, helping you move toward what you want and meet challenges well. Therapy tends to focus more on healing and understanding the past. Both have real value, and at OLIP Therapy you can access either, or move between them as your needs change.

Do I need to be in crisis to benefit?

Not at all. Coaching is for anyone who feels stuck, wants more from life, or is facing a challenge they want to meet well. You do not need to be struggling to grow.

Do I have to study philosophy?

No. You do not need to read a single book. We bring the practical ideas to you in plain language, focused entirely on your situation and your goals. If you would like a taste of it first, try our free Stoic Oracle.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies. Some people come for a handful of focused sessions around a specific challenge, while others value ongoing support over time. We will agree together what works best for you.

Can coaching be done online?

Yes. We offer coaching in person in Fareham, Hampshire, and securely online across the UK, whichever suits you better.

“The things that stand in your way are not the end of the road. With the right perspective, they can become the road itself.”
