What is CBT?

A practical therapy with a powerful idea

Cognitive behavioural therapy, or CBT, is a structured talking therapy that helps you identify the unhelpful thoughts driving how you feel and behave, then test and replace them with more balanced ones, using practical tools you can apply in everyday life.

It is built on a simple but profound insight: our thoughts, feelings and behaviours are all connected. Change one, and you can change the others.

Often recommended for anxiety, depression and stress, CBT is goal-orientated and focused on giving you skills that outlast the therapy itself.

Why it works so well

Built for lasting change, not just quick relief

CBT is widely regarded as one of the most effective treatments for anxiety, depression and chronic stress. Rather than only easing symptoms, it builds a strong mental foundation for the long term.

Common questions about CBT

How long does CBT take?

CBT is usually a focused, shorter-term therapy. Many people see real benefit within a number of structured sessions, though it depends on you and your goals. We will talk through what to expect, with no obligation to continue longer than you wish.

How much does CBT cost?

The initial consultation is free. CBT is £90 per 50 minute session, or £504 for a six-session programme, which saves you £36. All prices include VAT.

Is CBT evidence-based?

Yes. CBT is one of the most thoroughly researched talking therapies and is widely recommended for anxiety, depression and stress.

What happens in a CBT session?

You and your therapist work together to identify unhelpful thoughts and patterns, then build practical strategies to change them. It is collaborative, structured and focused on real, everyday change. Many people are given something small to try between sessions.

Are your CBT therapists qualified?

Yes. Our CBT therapists are appropriately trained, fully insured and work under regular clinical supervision. If you would like to see a particular therapist's qualifications before booking, just ask and we will send them over.

What is the difference between CBT and Hypno-CBT?

Straight CBT works with your conscious thinking, testing and reshaping unhelpful thoughts through structured exercises. Hypno-CBT combines those same techniques with hypnotherapy, using deep relaxation so the work reaches a subconscious level too. Which suits you better is something we will talk through at your free consultation. You can read more about hypnotherapy here.

What is the difference between CBT and counselling?

Counselling offers a reflective space to explore your feelings, while CBT is more structured and goal-orientated, giving you specific tools to change thoughts and behaviours. Many people benefit from elements of both, and we will help you find the right fit.

Can CBT be done online?

Yes. We offer secure online CBT across the UK, which is just as structured and effective as meeting in person, with the convenience of being at home.
