What is stress?

Helpful in a moment, harmful over time

Stress is your body's natural alarm response to pressure. It becomes a problem when it does not switch off, leaving you flooded with stress hormones your body was never meant to live with, which affects sleep, mood, relationships and physical health.

In short bursts stress sharpens you, helping you meet a deadline or react to danger. The problem comes when the alarm never stops sounding.

Over time that constant state takes a real toll. The good news is that it is not permanent, and the right support can help your system learn to settle again.

Light breaking through trees, representing calm after stress

How stress shows up

Stress is rarely just "in your head". It speaks through your body, your thoughts, your feelings and your behaviour. You may recognise a few of these, or many.

In your body

Headaches & muscle tension

Fatigue & low energy

Racing heart

Stomach & digestive problems

Disrupted sleep

In your mind

Racing, looping thoughts

Trouble concentrating

Constant worry

Forgetfulness

Feeling unable to decide

In your emotions

Irritability & short temper

Feeling overwhelmed

Anxiety & dread

Low mood

Loss of motivation

In your behaviour

Snapping at people you love

Withdrawing from others

Changes in how you eat

Leaning on alcohol or caffeine

Putting things off

If things feel heavier than stress, or you are worried about your health, please also speak to your GP. Therapy works well alongside medical support, not instead of it.

A moment of calm, right now

Take one minute to breathe

This is a taster of the calm we help you build. Follow the circle for a slow round of box breathing. In for four, hold for four, out for four, hold for four.

Breathe in Hold Breathe out Hold Breathe

Notice your shoulders drop. That is your nervous system beginning to settle.

Your stress response, explained

When your brain senses threat, it triggers one of three ancient survival responses. None of them are flaws. They are your mind trying to protect you. Therapy helps it learn that the danger has passed.

Fight

Irritability, anger and tension. The urge to push back against the pressure.

Flight

Restlessness, anxiety and the urge to escape, avoid or keep frantically busy.

Freeze

Feeling stuck, numb or overwhelmed, unable to act or even think clearly.

Whichever is most familiar to you, our work helps your nervous system come off high alert, so you can respond to life rather than simply survive it.

How we help you find calm

There is no single right way through stress. We match you to the approach, or blend of approaches, that fits you best.

Common questions about stress

Is stress a mental health problem?

Stress itself is a normal response, not an illness. But when it becomes constant or overwhelming, it can affect your mental and physical health and can feed conditions like anxiety, depression and burnout. Getting support early can stop it taking hold.

What is the difference between stress and anxiety?

Stress is usually a response to something identifiable and tends to ease when the pressure lifts. Anxiety often persists after the trigger has gone, or arrives without an obvious cause at all. The two overlap a great deal, and long-term stress can develop into anxiety, which is one reason not to leave it too long.

When should I get help for stress?

A good rule of thumb is when stress starts to interfere with your sleep, your relationships, your work or your enjoyment of life, or when it simply will not lift. You do not need to wait until you are at breaking point. Earlier is always easier.

Which therapy is best for stress?

It depends on you. CBT offers practical tools, hypnotherapy brings deep relaxation, counselling provides space to be heard, and approaches can be blended. In your free consultation we will help you find the right fit.

How much does it cost?

The initial consultation is free. Sessions are £90 for 50 minutes, or £504 for a six-session programme. Counselling for stress is £72 per session. All prices include VAT.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies. Situational stress often eases within a handful of sessions, while long-standing pressure or burnout usually needs longer. You will get a realistic estimate at your free consultation rather than after you have committed.

How quickly will I feel better?

Many people feel some relief simply from being heard in the first session. Lasting change builds over time, and varies from person to person. We will always be honest with you about what to expect.

Can you help with work or burnout stress?

Yes. Work pressure, overwhelm and burnout are some of the most common reasons people come to us. We help you manage the demands, set boundaries and rebuild your energy.

Can it be done online?

Yes. We offer stress therapy in person in Fareham, Hampshire, and securely online across the UK, whichever suits you better.

“You do not have to live braced for the next thing. Calm is not a luxury. It is something you can learn to come home to.”
