Portsmouth Counselling
A safe, confidential space to talk, near the M27 or online across the UK.
Counselling that helps you find steadier ground
When life in the city feels too loud, too fast, or simply too much, talking to someone who truly listens can change everything. Our award-winning counsellors support clients across Portsmouth, in person just off the M27 or online from your own sofa.
You don't have to work it all out on your own
Counselling is a confidential, professional relationship built around one purpose: helping you understand what's happening inside you, and giving you the support to change it.
Portsmouth is a city that never quite slows down, and neither do the pressures that come with it. Work stress, money worries, relationships under strain, grief that won't shift, or an anxiety that hums away in the background of everything. Many people carry these things for months or years before saying them out loud to anyone.
Counselling gives you somewhere to put it all down. Week by week, you and your counsellor make sense of what's really going on beneath the surface, at your pace and without judgement. Research consistently shows that the quality of the relationship between you and your therapist is one of the strongest predictors of success, which is why we take matching you with the right counsellor so seriously.
Signs it might be time to talk to someone
There's no threshold you need to meet and no problem too small. But these are some of the signs that counselling could genuinely help:
- You keep replaying the same worries, conversations, or regrets on a loop
- You're snappier, flatter, or more tearful than usual, and it's not lifting
- Sleep, appetite, or concentration have quietly gone off the rails
- You're coping on the outside but feel increasingly empty on the inside
- Friends and family are kind, but you need someone outside your life to talk to
- Something happened, recently or long ago, that you've never properly dealt with
Whatever you bring, we've sat with it before
Anxiety & overwhelm
Constant worry, racing thoughts, panic, and the exhausting feeling of being always on alert.
Depression & low mood
Heaviness, numbness, hopelessness, or losing the enjoyment of things you used to love.
Relationships & family
Conflict, distance, breakups, co-parenting strain, or patterns you keep repeating.
Grief & bereavement
The loss of someone or something precious, however recent or long ago it happened.
Self-esteem & identity
Harsh inner criticism, imposter feelings, or not really knowing who you are any more.
Work stress & burnout
Pressure, redundancy, career crossroads, or the slow burn of doing too much for too long.
What a counselling session actually looks like
If you've never had therapy before, the unknown can be the biggest barrier. Here's the honest picture.
A session lasts 50 minutes. There's no couch you have to lie on and no clipboard analysis. It's two comfortable chairs, or a video call if you're online, and a conversation that goes wherever you need it to. Some weeks you'll arrive knowing exactly what you want to talk about. Other weeks you won't, and that's fine too; often those sessions turn out to be the most useful.
Your counsellor's job isn't to give you advice or tell you what to do. It's to listen properly, ask the questions no one else asks, reflect back the patterns you can't see from the inside, and equip you with ways of coping that actually fit your life. Between sessions, many people notice they start processing things differently on their own. That's the real work taking hold.
