Why you go blank when you actually know the answer
Under enough pressure the body switches into fight or flight. Blood moves away from the thinking part of the brain and towards the muscles, which is exactly the wrong arrangement for recalling a formula or a set of dates. That is why you can revise for months and still lose the answer the moment you sit down.
The blank is not a memory problem. It is a physiology problem, and it is why revising harder does not fix it. You are already prepared. The work here is on the state you are in when you arrive.
There is a second layer too. Once it has happened once, the fear of it happening again becomes its own trigger, so the anxiety starts weeks before the exam rather than in the room.

The approach
How hypnotherapy calms exam nerves
Hypnotherapy works on the automatic stress response rather than trying to reason with it, which matters because you cannot talk yourself out of adrenaline once it has arrived.
Through deep relaxation you learn to settle that response, and through mental rehearsal you go through the exam, the test or the interview calmly, in advance, so the real thing is not the first time your brain has been there.
You also get relaxation techniques to use yourself, on the morning and in the room. Those stay with you long after the exam is over.
What changes
What the work actually does
Settles the nerves
Eases the fight or flight response that exams and tests set off, so your thinking brain stays available to you.
Builds confidence
Reinforces the belief that you are prepared, which for most people is true and simply not felt.
Sharpens focus
Helps you hold attention on the question in front of you rather than on the clock or the person finishing early.
Quiets the inner critic
Works on the running commentary that tells you you are going to fail while you are trying to think.
Gives you tools
Practical techniques for the night before, the morning of, and the moment you sit down.
Helps the revision too
Anxiety makes studying harder and less effective. Calmer weeks beforehand usually mean better preparation, not just a better day.
Driving test nerves
Hypnotherapy for driving test nerves
Driving test nerves are extremely common, and they undo months of good instruction in about ninety seconds. Your instructor has said you are ready. On the day, your hands do something else.
The pattern gets worse with each failed attempt, because now you are not only nervous about driving, you are nervous about being nervous. Breaking that loop is the actual work.
Through relaxation and mental rehearsal, you learn to stay steady behind the wheel and arrive at the test centre with the skills you already have intact.
Interviews & public speaking
Speaking up without the dread
Interviews, presentations and speaking in front of a room all share the same fear underneath: being judged and found wanting.
We work on shifting that from dread to something closer to anticipation, on visualising it going well rather than rehearsing disaster, and on quieting the inner critic that starts up the moment you stand.
These are transferable. People who come for one interview tend to find the next one considerably easier.
If you are a parent
Booking this for your son or daughter
A good many of these enquiries come from parents watching a capable teenager fall apart over exams, and feeling useless about it.
Several of our therapists work with young people, and exam nerves respond particularly well at that age. It does help if some part of your child wants to come, even a small part, so it is worth asking rather than booking it as a surprise.
Start with the free call yourself. Your child does not need to be there, and we will talk through what would suit them and how to raise it.
No surprises

Walk in calm, and give it your best
The goal is not to feel nothing. A bit of adrenaline sharpens you up, and people who feel nothing before an exam tend not to have revised. The goal is that the nerves stay at a level that helps rather than one that empties your head.
Your questions answered
Exam nerves questions, answered
Can hypnotherapy really help with exam nerves?
Many people find it very helpful. It works on the automatic stress response and on mental rehearsal, rather than asking you to talk yourself out of nerves in the moment, which rarely works. Results vary from person to person, and this is one of the areas where people are most often surprised by how much a small number of sessions can do.
My exam is next week. Is it too late?
Probably not. More time is better, but useful work still happens close to the day, particularly relaxation techniques and mental rehearsal. Tell us the date when you get in touch and we will be honest about what is realistic rather than taking a booking we cannot deliver on.
Why do I go blank when I know the material?
Because under enough pressure the body shifts into fight or flight, and blood moves away from the thinking part of the brain. It is a physiology problem rather than a memory problem, which is exactly why more revision does not fix it and why calming the response does.
Can you help with driving test nerves specifically?
Yes, and it is one of our most common requests. It gets harder with each failed attempt because you become nervous about being nervous. Breaking that loop, through relaxation and mental rehearsal, is what the work does.
How many sessions will I need?
Many people find real benefit in a small number of sessions, since this is usually focused work on a specific event. Where there is longer-standing anxiety underneath, it can take a little more. You will get an honest idea at your free call.
What if my nerves come from something deeper?
Sometimes exam nerves are the visible end of a broader anxiety, or of something that happened earlier in education. If that is what we are looking at, we will say so and suggest an approach that fits, rather than treating the surface and leaving the rest.
Do you work with teenagers?
Yes. Several of our therapists work with young people, and exam nerves respond particularly well at that age. If you are a parent, start with the free call yourself. Your child does not need to be on it.
Will it help with my revision as well as the exam?
Usually. Anxiety makes studying harder, less focused and less effective, so calmer weeks beforehand tend to mean better preparation as well as a better day. Several people also come for procrastination alongside this.
Is this just for students?
Not at all. We see plenty of adults sitting professional exams, retaking driving tests, facing interviews or preparing for presentations. Performance nerves do not have an age limit.
Can I have sessions online?
Yes. You can be seen in person at our Fareham practice or online from anywhere in the UK. Both work equally well, and online is easy to fit around revision, school or work.
